2. Sex Seals / Binds A Marriage And Establishes A Family
The bonding is intense, involving the physical, emotional, spiritual, even our sense of identity.
Genesis 2:23-25, Adam exclaims, “This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.” Then it establishes saying, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
Now if we had read all of Genesis 1 and 2, we would have discovered that “man” and “woman” belongs to a whole line of complementary pairings. There had been of heaven and earth, evening and morning, and day and night. Finally, there is man and woman (not boy and girl) metamorphosing into ONE CONJUGAL ENTITY (husband and wife).
Lest there be any doubt that the text is talking about sex, a later biblical authority, Paul, in 1Cor 6:16 (Msg.) forbidding sex with a non-spouse says ”There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, “The two become one.”… We must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever — the kind of sex that can never “become one.
What happens in sexual intercourse? Two bodies graphically become one, as one goes inside another, the other engulfs or encapsulates him. This both seals the marriage, and it affirms us as relational beings in the most intimate way. Throughout the Bible, what actually affirms and seals a marriage is their act of sexual union.
Are you beginning to see why sex is so profound and glorious in the Christian vision? It involves us at some primal level of our persons, such that there is a hard-to-articulate kind of completeness to us in it. Eph. 5:31-32 terms it “great mystery” (reveal-able within its true context). Sex is powerful and intense.
